Boom, Clap!

Thunderstorms, Lightning Kill 100 People a Year

Across the Earth, thunderstorms happen at least once a day. Some of these storms are so strong that they can demolish entire buildings.

Thunderstorms happen when moisture and rising air mix. This process happens in multiple steps. First, a big and puffy cumulus cloud forms from air and condensed moisture. Then, the cloud develops and begins to produce thunder, lightning, rain, or even hail. When the storm ends, this cloud drifts apart into wisps called cirrus clouds.

Lightning, which all thunderstorms produce, can reach 54,000 degrees Fahrenheit. This is around five times hotter than the temperature of the Sun's surface, which is why lightning strikes can be so deadly. In fact, lightning kills around 100 people each year.

Thunderstorms can be incredibly dangerous. It is important to stay safe, inside, or in dry areas during these storms!
