Gregg Berhalter, the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team coach, was fired recently after the team’s July loss against Uruguay in the Copa America league.
Before hiring Berhalter, the U.S. Men's National Team’s goal was to ensure the team was able to qualify for that year’s World Cup. As the U.S. Men's National Team was selected to co-host the 2026 World Cup, Berhalter’s job became to establish a young core of American players and develop them into future contenders.
After disappointing results from team U.S.A., Berhalter was already expected to be fired. The last straw was when Colombia beat the U.S. in a pre-Copa exhibition game 5-1.
In the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the U.S. was able to pull through the grouping stage and reached “the round of 16” but fell short to the Netherlands 3-1. After these losses, the U.S. Men’s National Team was fed up with Berhalter’s coaching. Matt Crocker, the U.S. Soccer sporting director, gave his response to dismissing Berhalter, saying, “Our immediate focus is on finding a coach who can maximize our potential as we continue to prepare for the 2026 World Cup, and we have already begun our search process.”
The U.S. Soccer team is looking for a coach that is high-profile and who is looking to win. Jürgen Klopp, a former Premier League and Champions League coach who recently left his mark at Liverpool, would fit the U.S. organization’s preferences. Although Klopp would fit well with the U.S., there are many questions about whether there is enough money to bring in such a high-caliber coach.
Berhalter’s replacement signals a new direction for the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team. This change reflects the team’s ambition to enhance its performance on the world stage.
