Sunisa Lee’s Comeback Story Inspires Fans Worldwide

Sunisa Lee is a talented gymnast who has endured many challenges to reach the status she has today. She participated most recently in the 2024 Paris Olympics as a part of Team U.S.A.’s women’s gymnastics team along with Simone Biles.

Sunisa Lee grew up in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Once her father noticed that she loved moving and tumbling around, he decided to build a wooden balance beam in their backyard for her to practice.

When Sunisa was six years old, she joined the Midwest Gymnastics Centre in Little Canada, Minnesota, to start her formal training. At seven years old, in her second competition, Suni won an all-around competition at the state meet. The next year, she advanced through three different skill levels. As the years passed, Sunisa’s skills improved. At the age of 11, she qualified for the elite program, allowing her to represent the United States in international competitions. Sunisa participated in both the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Lee became the first Asian American woman to win the gold medal in the women’s all-around event. She also secured a silver medal in the team event and a bronze medal in the uneven bars.

Lee’s success didn’t come easy—she had to navigate serious health issues that set her back and challenged her ability to compete. In 2023, one morning, Suni woke up with swollen ankles. Initially, she thought nothing of these symptoms and assumed they came from her intense training. However, concerns slowly arose as other parts of her body began to swell.

“I just kept getting more swollen, and I think I gained, like 40 pounds,” Lee stated to Self Magazine. It was soon discovered that her condition was worsening due to kidney impairment, which prompted doctors to urge her to stop training and competing.

In April 2023, Sunisa shared this news with her supporters through social media. While it was a difficult decision to take a step back from her passion, Sunisa emphasized the importance of prioritizing her health. She was unable to do gymnastics until she healed, lost weight, and regained her strength.

As time went on, Sunisa slowly began to recover and reintroduce gymnastics and training into her routine. She seized the opportunity to participate in the U.S. Olympic Trials in June 2024, where she earned a spot on the national women’s gymnastics team. Not long after, Sunisa made her triumphant comeback and continued painting her legacy.

At the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, the world watched with anticipation as Sunisa showcased her remarkable skills once again. Expectations were high, as Lee stated, “The pressure was definitely on…” Despite the immense pressure, Sunisa performed to the best of her ability, winning a bronze medal in the women’s all-around, another bronze in the uneven bars, and contributing to Team U.S.A.’s gold medal in the team event. In total, Sunisa Lee left Paris with three Olympic medals, adding to her three previous Olympic wins from 2020.

Sunisa Lee’s story of resilience has inspired many people around the world. She is an extraordinary athlete and has become a symbol of determination and pride for her community. Sunisa’s journey continues to motivate young athletes, and her achievements have only just begun.
