NBA star Kawhi Leonard is reported to be out indefinitely just as his Los Angeles Clippers teammates start the 2024-25 season.
Leonard is out due to inflammation in his right knee. Kawhi Leonard is a two-time NBA champion, six-time All-star, and has twice been named finals MVP. He has won two defensive player-of-the-year awards. Kawhi is a beloved player among basketball fans for his determined, no-smile look.
Kawhi Leonard learned the game of basketball in Riverside, California, where he played at Martin Luther King High School. In the 2009 college basketball recruiting class, experts ranked him as one of the top small forwards in the country and the 48th-best overall player. During his senior season, Leonard averaged 22.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 3 blocks per game.
He had lots of college recruiters watching. During his last season in high school, Kawhi decided he wanted to play in his home state of California and decided to take his talents to San Diego State.
Kawhi’s basketball career took off at San Diego State. He averaged 14.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists during his two years playing for the Aztecs. After finishing his sophomore year, Leonard decided to declare for the NBA draft. Kawhi’s hard work had paid off -- he was the 15th overall pick in the 2011 draft.
Kawhi Leonard was selected by the San Antonio Spurs. He played for that franchise from 2011 to 2018. His seven years with the Spurs Kawhi included an NBA championship and a finals MVP in 2014. The following year he was named Defensive Player of the Year.
Kawhi continued to play a key role in the Spurs offense up until 2018 when he was traded to the Toronto Raptors. With the Raptors Kawhi would go on to win another NBA title, Toronto's first franchise championship. Leonard also won his second finals MVP in 2019.
After his first and last season with the Toronto Raptors Kawhi was traded again. Kawhi was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, where he currently plays. Kawhi remains a key player for the Clippers but has missed playing time due to injuries. Before the 2024-2025 season started Kawhi Leonard was ruled indefinitely and designated as injured. Ongoing problems with knee inflammation are probably due to previous injuries.
Kawhi is an amazing player and likely a Hall of Famer. He was the first-ever player to win a championship by a buzzer-beater. Leonard is a player whose presence on the court will be missed. Kawhi’s injuries might even cause him to retire as he is in his 12th year in the NBA. His achievements will be remembered.
For now, the Clippers have lost a key offensive player. Fans are waiting to see about Kawhi’s recovery, hoping to hear the stadium chant again … “Kawhi Leonard”.
