Today, Rihanna is one of the generation's most well-known female pop artists. However, life for the pop star was not always easy and she had to work incredibly hard to achieve the status she has today.
Born in Saint Michael, Barbados on Feb. 20, 1988, Robyn Rihanna Fenty was the oldest of three siblings. She had a difficult childhood as her father struggled through drug addiction, leading to her parents’ rough marriage that ultimately ended when she was 14 years old.
Rihanna attended Charles F. Broome Memorial Primary School and Combermere School in Barbados. At 15 years old, Rihanna formed a musical trio with two classmates. During this similar period, she won her high school beauty pageant.
Rihanna’s musical career took a step further in 2003 when a few friends introduced Evan Rogers, a record producer, to her trio girls group. The group auditioned for Rogers, and Rihanna’s presence and abilities instantly captured his attention. She sang Destiny’s Child’s Cover of “Emotion” during her audition.
For the next year, Rihanna and her mom frequently visited Roger’s home in Stamford, Connecticut. When Rihanna turned 16, she moved in with Roger and his wife in the United States. During her summers and school breaks, Rihanna would record demos. Carl Sturken helped her record four song demos, one of them being “Pon de Replay,” which became one of her first hits. Her demos eventually went to Def Jam, inviting her to audition for the label’s then-president, Jay-Z. It didn’t take long for Jay-Z to sign her for the label.
In 2005, Rihanna released her debut album, which included her number two hit single, “Pon de Replay.” Less than a year later, she released another album, “A Girl Like Me,” which earned her first number-one single.
In June 2007, Rihanna released her third album, “Good Girl Gone Bad.” The album topped the charts in many countries around the world and peaked at number two in the United States and Australia. Unlike previous work, this album contained more dance-pop instead of Reggae and ballad styles. It received many positive reviews from critics and became her most critically acclaimed album.
In March 2007, Rihanna released one of her most famous songs, “Umbrella,” which reached the number-one spot in the United Kingdom for ten consecutive weeks, making it the longest-running number-one single since 1994. In 2008, “Umbrella” earned Rihanna and Jay-Z a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and received nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
In 2010, Rihanna released her fifth studio album, Loud. Its lead single, “Only Girl (In The World),” reached number one in many countries and won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording. A year later, Rihanna became the fastest solo artist in chart history to achieve 20 Hot 100 top-10 singles, breaking the previous record set by Madonna.
On Jan. 28, 2016, Rihanna released her eighth studio album. The album peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200, becoming Rihanna’s second number one on the charts.
Later that year, Rihanna was featured in several singles. Her first collaboration was with Calvin Harris on “This Is What You Came For.” Also, on Aug. 28, 2016, Rihanna was honored with the MTV Video Music Award.
After 2016, Rihanna took a step back from performing. Her next stage appearance did not happen until Feb. 12, 2023, when she performed at the Super Bowl. She performed fan favorites such as “Umbrella,” “Rude Boy,” and “Diamonds.”
This was the first time she had performed in over seven years since the release of her studio album “Anti” and since becoming a mother of her firstborn son.
Rihanna is more than just a musician, she owns her makeup brand Fenty Beauty and earned over $72 million in sales. Her cosmetics line has allowed her to become one of the wealthiest female musicians in the industry. Rihanna is a multi-talented woman, and she has shown through her successful singing, acting, and entrepreneurial careers.
