Sanrio’s Sweet Bunny, My Melody, Turns 50

In January 1975, a very famous Japanese caricature, My Melody, was created. The design of My Melody was made by Yasuko Matsumo and is one of the 450 original characters owned by Sanrio, a Japanese entertainment company. Other well-known characters include Little Twin Stars, Coro Chan, and the iconic Hello Kitty.

My Melody was born in Maryland, a fictional forest, and is typically referred to as My Melo for short. She is Hello Kitty’s best friend, with whom both characters have had several interactions in media over the years.

My Melody’s appearance is that of a cartoon bunny with a pink hood, which her grandma made. The hood covers her whole head except for her face. She has a yellow oval-shaped nose and white fur. She is kind and she loves her family and friends. Her brother, Rhythm, is always causing trouble, but she still loves him. My Melody loves to bake with her mom, especially almond pound cake.

My Melody shares the spotlight in Mariland with Kuromi, who was once her arch-rival and eventually became a friend. There is a series of My Melody and Kuromi releasing in July 2025 on Netflix. This new show will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi. My Melody is a lovable rabbit that has hung over time and continues to excite Sanrio enthusiasts!
