Komodo Dragons Are Powerful Hunters Facing an Uncertain Future

Komodo dragons are the strongest and heaviest lizards in the world. They hunt for prey with extremely sharp, long claws. When a Komodo Dragon attacks, they use their sharp claws to tear the prey into pieces.

Komodo dragons can weigh up to 165 kilograms and grow as long as three meters. Komodo dragons are more active and hunt mostly during the middle of the year, around June and July. Female Komodo dragons can lay anywhere from four to 30 eggs at a time.

Komodo dragons eat all different types of food, including small insects, lizards, and snakes. They also eat birds, rats, wild pigs, water buffalo, and deer. Their average lifespan is between 45 and 55 years. Komodo dragons are often found on some islands of Indonesia.

The bites of Komodo dragons are deadly. When a Komodo dragon bites its prey, it releases a chemical called "anticoagulant”, which stops the wound from closing, meaning its prey could die from just one bite. The Komodo dragon’s teeth are straight and arranged in neat rows. Their teeth have serrated edges, much like sharks, and slice through their prey easily. All of this helps a Komodo dragon be a successful hunter.

While the Komodo dragon may be the heaviest and strongest among lizards, it's currently listed as an endangered species by the World Conservation Union. Efforts must be made to help them.
