Local Chapter President Recognized by SPJ
by Lucy Benton, age 12
The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) announced they will honor Madison chapter president Mark Pitsch with the 2014 Howard S. Dubin Outstanding Pro Member Award later this year. President since 2011, Pitsch has played a strong role in reactivating the Madison chapter.
“Mark has been instrumental in bringing young and experienced journalists together in the Madison area. His leadership in training journalists has helped build the Madison Pro chapter into one of the finest in the country,” said Joe Radske, SPJ Region 6 director and a member of the SPJ Madison Pro chapter.
No more than two members—one from a chapter of more than 75 members and one from a chapter of less than 75 members—win the Howard Dubin Award each year. Honoring longtime SPJ member of the Chicago Headline Club Howard Dubin, the award aims to recognize those who contribute time, money, and service to their chapters.

know well the positive influence Pitsch has had in Madison's journalistic community. Always willing to facilitate a tour at Capitol Newspapers or lend a helping hand, Pitsch has served as a reliable resource for our organization. We are grateful for his help and congratulate him on this outstanding achievement.
Pitsch and this year's other recipient, J. Alex Tarquinio of New York, will be commended at the annual Excellence in Journalism meeting in Nashville, Tennessee, from Sept. 4-6.
