Profiling an American Football Great: Kam Chancellor

Kameron “Kam” Chancellor began his football career as a leading player at Maury High School. Today, the six-foot star is a Super Bowl Champion and safety for the Seattle Seahawks.

Chancellor was born in Norfolk, Virginia. He was one of five siblings. Chancellor wasn’t born into much money, but his mother emphasized family and good values.

In high school, Chancellor played basketball and football. During football season of his senior year, he earned over 2,000 passing yards and 500 rushing yards. Chancellor also led his team to a 10-2 record and was named their “Most Valuable Player.”

After graduating from high school, Chancellor attended Virginia Tech. In 2006, he tried out to be the school’s quarterback, but he was eventually rotated to cornerback just before the season began. As a cornerback his freshman year, he achieved nine tackles, broke up two passes, and had one interception. Chancellor had begun to make a name for himself in the football world.

Chancellor contemplated entering the 2009 NFL Draft early, but he decided to complete his last season at Virginia Tech. Following graduation here, he was drafted to the Seattle Seahawks with the 133rd overall pick in round five of the 2010 NFL draft.

Chancellor didn’t play during his rookie season with the Seahawks, but he began the 2011 season as the team’s safety. He had a very successful season and was added to the 2012 Pro Bowl roster due to his outstanding tackles and interceptions.

Chancellor is now a four-time Pro Bowl champion. He was also named the NFC “Defensive Player of the Week” at one point in the 2014 season--the same year in which he helped lead the Seahawks to a landslide history in Super Bowl XLVIII against the Denver Broncos.

Today, Chancellor is one of the best players in the NFL. In his early career, he said he wanted to be just like Sean Taylor, another talented safety in the NFL. It seems Chancellor has achieved his goal: he has become a world-famous athlete, just like Taylor. Fans can’t wait to see what’s next for Chancellor as he heads into another season with the Seahawks.
