Many people are concerned about chemical waste and byproducts polluting our natural environment. So, it’s good to know there is something close to home we can do about it. “Clean Sweep” is a local effort that helps dispose of common household chemicals.
On Saturday, October 23, the City of Fitchburg will partner with Dane County, the Madison Area Municipal Storm Water Partnership, and the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District to help Dane County residents dispose of household hazardous waste. The event will take place from 8am to noon at 5955 McKee Rd in the parking lot behind Oak Bank.
Household chemicals and other items that pose potential environmental risks can be difficult to get rid of safely. And yet most households use cleaning products and other chemicals that eventually need to be disposed of. These kinds of products should not be placed in recycling bins or curbside trash.
The County has hosted similar events in the past and plans to hold more Clean Sweep opportunities in the future, according to Kevin Belida, Hazardous Waste Coordinator for the Dane County Clean Sweep program. “Safely disposing of household chemicals is an important step in protecting our local environment,” he said. “We definitely want to get the word out and assist Dane County residents in doing their part.”
Belida says that while electronics like old computer equipment will not be accepted at this event, people can still use the Clean Sweep program to dispose of these items. Computers and other electronics can be dropped off at the Clean Sweep facility located at the Dane County landfill, 7102 U.S. Highway 12&18, on Madison’s east side.
Other items that will not be accepted at the October 23 event include appliances, fluorescent lamps, cooking oil, medical sharps and medication. Among the many products and materials that will be accepted and disposed of properly are household cleaners, corrosives, solvents, aerosol cans, flammable liquids, and various automotive products. Lawn and garden chemicals will also be accepted.
Materials should be stored and transported in boxes or rigid totes. This will keep products upright and prevent spillage during transportation and unloading. All materials should be in their original containers. If the container is damaged, place it in an individual plastic bag. Don’t mix materials or co-mingle your waste in plastic bags.
