Lions: The King of the Jungle
by Max Moreno, age 9
The king of the jungle is mostly found in sub-Saharan Africa. Lions usually hunt during the night time and their diet can include buffaloes, zebras, wild hogs, among other prey. They can survive up to four to five days without drinking water due to moisture from their stomachs.
The lion is the second-largest cat in the world and can run up to 50 mph to catch its prey. Lions can give birth to two to three cubs at a time and the cubs are usually raised by the entire family.
In terms of their sleep, lions typically sleep 10-16 hours a day. They are the laziest but most social of the big cats, sometimes they can be found sleeping on their backs or on a tree.
The lion is an animal that moves as a collective. They travel in groups called pride. There can be up to 30 lions in pride but it heavily depends on the food that is available. Male lions usually protect the cubs and territory while the females go and hunt. Male and female lions can also work together to capture their prey
The lions have great night vision. Along with that, they also have very good hearing. Lions can turn their ears from side to side to catch sounds coming from almost every direction, this allows them to hear prey that is more than a mile away.
They stand between three and a half and four feet tall at the shoulder. Males grow to lengths of ten feet and a tail from two to three feet long. They can weigh from 330 to 550 pounds.
Many refer to the lion as the king of the jungle. A lion’s tooth is about ten centimeters long and its bite force will depend on its age and size. It is a common belief that a lion is only able to produce around 650 psi with its bite. A lion's claw is about one and a half inches in length. From just one strike of their paw, a lion can kill an adult hyena but when ambushed by a group of them, the lion can be killed as well. Lions are one of the most dangerous animals on the planet. They are aggressive and dangerous to humans when protecting their cubs, territory, or carcasses that they've hunted. Their thick manes, a unique trait to male lions, protect their necks when they fight with challengers.
Lions are responsible for about 200 human deaths per year, which puts them in the top 10 most deadly animals.
With their intense strength and advanced abilities, it is important to watch out for these creatures if you ever decide to visit their habitat and territories!
