The Giant Pacific Octopus is a Fascinating Creature
by Joseph Zheng, age 8
What has eight arms and no bones? Octopi!
Octopi live in the Pacific Ocean, which is a cold body of water that stretches from California to Japan. The giant Pacific octopus is characterized by its reddish-brown color, but it sometimes changes color when it gets excited.
These octopi are hunted by seals, sea otters, sharks, and large fish. They often live in shallow tides. The giant Pacific octopus diet consists of crab, lobsters, fish, clams, oysters, and dead animals!
The octopi mate in the fall and lay between 10,000 and 20,000 eggs at a time! This is because of their large size. Giant Pacific octopi are often 16 feet wide and weigh around 132 pounds. Some can weigh up to 600 pounds; that's the size of a small car!
Octopi are interesting and unique sea creatures, who we will continue to learn more about in the coming years.
