Researchers Solve Mystery of Dinosaur Arm Bones Found 50 Years Ago

Fifty years ago, some researchers found two enormous dinosaur arms. Since then, palaeontologists have been wondering what kind of dinosaur these arms belonged to.

Recently, two full dinosaur skeletons were found in Mongolia, with big arms identical to the ones researchers found fifty years ago. After scientists put the skeletons together, the creature looked even more bizarre than they had thought.

“It turned out to be one of the weirdest dinosaurs, it's weird beyond our imagination,” said Lead Researcher Yuong-Nam Lee. They named this dinosaur Deinocheirus mirificus , which means unusual, horrible hands.

The Deinocheirus has an odd variation of characteristics. Many researchers thought it was somewhat like a T-Rex predator, as it used it long arms to hang from branches. Its beak was similar to a duck's. It also had a large hump on its back with a sail, and a long neck. Its legs were short, and had hoofed-like feet, possibly helping to creature get around its wet habitat.

“It's shocking to see how many weird features it has. It changes our view of what kind of forms dinosaurs can even take,” said Professor John Hutchinson, a palaeontologist from UK's Royal Veterinary College. After half a century, this paleontological mystery has finally been solved.
