Efforts to Conserve African Elephants are Coming Up Short

African elephants are massive, majestic creatures; unfortunately, however, they are also endangered. African elephants are getting shot and killed every day for their ivory in their tusks. Ivory is sold all around the world as a luxury item. Elephants are also hunted for their meat and skin, both of which can be used for fashion purposes.

There are many conservation efforts to save these great elephants, but some of them are expensive. For example, one conservation effort involves putting up electric fences, which protect farmers' crops and keep elephants out, which in turn lowers the amount of conflict between elephants and angry farmers.

Another conservation attempt to increase the population of African elephants is the establishment national parks where they live. The estimated price to maintain these parks is $600 per square mile each year. Because this is very expensive, though, the population of elephants in many countries has stayed the same or even declined in recent years.

Though there are efforts to protect African elephants, they come at a great cost. Unfortunately, it appears that this price may just be too high—time may be running out for good for these wonderful animals.

It's really messed up how these elephants are being killed so often...maybe people should create special laws that can really punish hunters for stuff like this. Great job Amara. – Azario , Sennett (2017-02-28 18:50)
