Earth’s Neighbors: Mars and Venus

Venus and Mars are the two closest planet to Earth. Scientists have discovered a lot about these planets. Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system. Venus has toxic clouds and acid that would burn human skin. Heat From the sun gets trapped by clouds around the planet. This is what makes Venus so hot. Even though Mercury is the closest planet to the sun, Venus is still the hottest.

Most people now that Mars is called the “red planet.” This is because the planet is covered with red dust. Strong winds blow copper dust all over the surface of Mars.

Mars is also the home of the solar system's largest volcano: Olympus Mons. It is very old and three times bigger than Mount Everest. Everest is the tallest mountain on planet Earth. Because Venus is closer to the sun than Earth, it takes less time to orbit the sun so, a year on Venus is only 225 days. Mars is further from the sun, so its year is longer. A Mars year lasts 687 days, while a year on Earth is 365 days.
