Name That Planet!

How Our Solar System Was Named

by Dismand Champion, age 8

All the planets got their names from Roman gods and goddesses, except for Earth.
Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn were all named after Roman gods and goddesses thousands of years ago. When they named them, these were the only planets scientists could see without a telescope – as telescopes were not yet invented. Once these planets were named and new planets were discovered, it became a tradition to name planets after Roman gods and goddesses.
Some moons and asteroids were named after critters and gods and goddesses too, as were constellations, like Orion.

This is a great article! I love Roman and Greek mythology! – Alex LeeMadison, WI (2013-01-08 19:23)
