Elbow Grease

by Annie Shao, age 16

Have you ever heard someone say, “Put some elbow grease into that, will you?” Young people today may hear this saying from parents, teachers, and other adults in their lives, but they also may not know exactly what it means. But this phrase and its definition was well known by American youth about 30 years ago. Today, with the rapid growth of technology and cultural changes, this knowledge has mostly been lost.

The term “elbow grease” simply means effort and hard work. In particular the term is applied to jobs, tasks, or situations that require physical effort. So the next time you are faced with a difficult task, put some “elbow grease” into it, and it will be well worth it!

This is really cool. I didn't know that. – Jose Alverez , Miami, Fl (2011-01-31 19:45)
