A Hispanic Graduation Celebration

More than 100 Adult Leaders Complete Computer Skills Classes

by Nancy Garduño, age 13

Recently, a celebration of achievement was held for Spanish-speakers at a local Madison church. More than 100 people received certificates recognizing their completion of computer skills classes offered by the Vera Court and Bridge-Lake Point-Waunona neighborhood centers. Classes included basic computing, intermediate skills, Microsoft I, and Microsoft II.

The celebration started off with a brief welcome speech given by Victor Cuatepotzo, the instructor of these computer classes. He congratulated his students for sticking with the program.

Children held a variety of flags at the graduation, each representing the student’s country. Walking around the church, it was clear that the children felt pride for their hard working parents.

PowerPoint demonstrations developed by the Intermediate class were then shown. Once these were over, there was resounding applause—not only because the project was finished, but also because the smell of hot dogs and La Bamba food permeated the air.

Food was probably on many people’s minds by the time it finally arrived. During this time, families and friends were able to talk and spend time with one another. After all, this was a celebration. Photographs were taken, no doubt souvenirs of the triumphant evening.

Even though these graduates might only be beginning to develop their computer knowledge, their experience with this program has established a foundation. With these computer skills in place it is easier to seek jobs and pursue education.

Now that’s really a cause for celebration!
