Just Like Josh Gibson

This Children's Book is Inspiring For Kids of All Ages

by Taylor Kilgore, age 14

Just Like Josh Gibson, is a wonderful little book by Angela Johnson, and is perfect for young girls aspiring to become baseball players, or just about any other career traditionally thought of as “man’s work.” In this book, a little girl tells the story of her grandmother’s love for baseball as a child growing up in the 1940s. Her grandmother’s favorite player was the great Negro League baseball player Josh Gibson. Although this is definitely a children’s book, the poem-like style of the book makes it a fun and easy read for kids of all ages.

The little girl describes her grandma’s baseball skills as a young girl by saying, “she could do it all, hit, throw, and fly around the bases.” Her grandma knew that she was good enough to play with the boys. But it didn’t matter how good she was, because in those days girls were not allowed to play baseball.

But one day something amazing happened and her dream of playing baseball with the boys came true.

Even though this is a children’s book, it is now one of my favorites. I like the way the book incorporates the success of Josh Gibson with the story of a young girl aspiring to play baseball. This book has a great message for kids all ages, but is written at a 1st or 2nd grade level. Reading Just Like Josh Gibson will make you want to keep picking this book up to read it again.
